Mike Williams is hanging his cleats up for good. The Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver informed the team of his plans to retire from the NFL on Wednesday night, a person close to the situation told USA TODAY Sports' Tyler Dragon.

Williams was a perfect veteran presence, a bigger target that already had rapport with Justin Herbert. Now that they're back in the market for an experienced wideout, the Chargers need to pivot quickly now that training camp is underway.

Wide receiver Mike Williams is retiring, the Chargers confirmed Thursday as the team began camp. Just as a hole opened in the receivers room, the Chargers also signed rookie receiver Tre’ Harris, the team announced, ending the second-round pick’s contract holdout.
