PORTLAND, Ore. — About five years after it was vandalized during the 2020 protests and moved to a storage facility, the famed Thompson Elk Statue will return to downtown Portland.
Portland has allocated $1.5 million to restore the Thompson Elk statue and fountain that were damaged in the 2020 protests.
Officials have delayed the Thompson Elk Fountain’s return several times, originally promising to restore it by the end of 2022. The city approved $1.5 million to refurbish the sculpture in 2023.
The statue, formally known as the David P. Thompson Fountain, was donated by a former Portland mayor in 1900 and is simply an elk standing on top of a water fountain.
