This article originally appeared on Asbury Park Press: 61.6 million Americans hitting the road for Fourth of July weekend, according to AAA As the nation gears up for Independence Day, AAA is forecasting a monumental surge in road travel, with an unprecedented 61.6 million Americans projected to hit the road by car.

More than 2 million people from Massachusetts are expected to hit the road over the July Fourth holiday week, according to travel experts at AAA Northeast. These folks will travel at least 50 miles from home between Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, July 6, and the vast majority (1.77 million) of them are expected to travel by car, AAA said.
